Katharine Hepburn Biography
Katharine Hepburn
"If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun."

Katharine Hepburn, born May 12, 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut, was the daughter of a doctor and a suffragette. Her parents encouraged her to think for herself, speak her mind, use her brain and exercise her body. She apparently followed these directions well – she did not play the “Hollywood Game” – she wore slacks, no make-up, would not pose for pictures or give interviews. Audiences did not go to see her films and critics panned them. Ms. Hepburn went back to Broadway to work in the theater and starred in The Philadelphia Story. It was a huge success so she bought the film rights, chose the director, George Cukor, and the co-stars including Cary Grant, James Stewart and Ruth Hussey. The movie was as successful as the play, Hepburn won her third Oscar and once again she was accepted in Hollywood.

Now that Ms. Hepburn (called Kate) was in good-standing in Hollywood, she made a new film in 1942 – Woman of the Year – her first film with Spencer Tracy. They made eight more films together and their romance lasted from 1943 until his death in 1967, just a few weeks after Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was finished. Ms. Hepburn is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records for “Most ‘Best Actress’ Oscars won.” She was nominated 12 times for an Academy Award, all in the Best Actress category. In fact she was never nominated for anything except Best Actress in a Leading Role. Her last film was a 1994 made-for-TV film, One Christmas. As her health deteriorated, she moved back to her home in Old Saybrook, Connecticut where she died of natural causes on June 29, 2003 at the age of 96.
